You sit at the board and suddenly your heart leaps. Your hand trembles to pick up the piece and move it. But what chess teaches you is that you must sit there calmly and think about whether it’s really a good idea and whether there are other, better ideas.
Perhaps it sounds ridiculous, but the best thing that young filmmakers should do is to get hold of a camera and some film and make a movie of any kind at all.
A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.
If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed.
The destruction of this planet would have no significance on a cosmic scale.

Vienna. Two days is certainly not enough time for this city, but nonetheless I enjoyed the time. 9 photos.

It seems the conclusion I’ve reached through nine records worth of songs that deal with this issue of autonomy is that it’s over-rated. I’ll take the comfort of others even if it’s an illusion of security.

Ski Trip to the Alps, with Noah Goldsmith and Matt Ininns
11 Feb. 2012 - 18 Feb. 2012
Skiing at Portes du Soleil in the French-Swiss Alps. 8 photos.
The mountains were beyond incredible. Certainly one of the most amazing places i have been to. Skied hard for six days, spent the evenings sitting around, resting the legs, enjoying plenty of beverages, chillin’ real good. Operated on the same diet for the entire week: eggs-potatoes-OJ for breakfast, cheap deli sandwiches eaten on mountain for lunch, snacks on snacks, pasta for dinner. First three days were clear groomer days, great for taking in views of the mountains and getting the ski legs back. Lots of snow overnight and all the next day led to three days of amazing powder skiing! The afternoon of the final day got warm and clear again bringing a nice conclusion to it all.
Look forward to video, better documenting the trip. To be posted soon!

Orvieto, Italia. A lovely small Italian town settled upon a hill. Much of the medieval fortress walls are still present built into the cliffs. A highlight of the day was getting to ride a funicular up and down between the train station and the town. Funicular is just a fun word to use. 5 photos

Cimitero di San Cataldo, a post-modern city of the dead. Creepy but cool. Designed by Aldo Rossi. Only one-third is completed; its incomplete status of the cemetery is partly what makes it feel creepy. 7 photos

M. Ward: “The First Time I Ran Away”
M. Ward returns to familiar hushed territory this morning with our first taste of his 7th solo record, A Wasteland Companion. “The First Time I Ran Away” arrives steeped in calm, nuanced instrumentation that picks up where 2009’s Hold Time left off well, complete with an animated music video by “Chinese Translation” director Joel Trussell. Enjoy the clip above, and stick around as Ward draws out his vocal on the word “storm” until it dissolves with a chilling yet nerve-settling effect.
